“Introducing Community Transport Oxford”
Speaker: Christopher Gowers, Acting Transport Manager.
A very interesting presentation described the development of CTO over the last 5 years. Community Transport is defined as the sharing of vehicles on a not-for-profit basis, organised communally: car clubs, lift-giving and minibuses (seating a maximum 16), all included.
The need to expand this vital service for many groups and individuals without private transport or unable to access public transport was described, within the current funding crisis facing many groups and public transport in general. The benefits are both for disadvantaged groups/individuals, and for communities, as well as for the volunteer drivers and assistants.
Other existing schemes include North Oxford Association, Sobell House, Dial-a-Ride, Aspire, Salvation Army, Barton Community Minibus, Emmaus, South Oxford Van Share.
